At Scallywags, we understand that childrenโs emotions and behaviour are an essential part of their growth and development. Itโs not uncommon for children to experience big feelings, and as caregivers, itโs our responsibility to help them navigate through these emotions. We take pride in our commitment to supporting children in this journey, and in this blog post, weโll share how weโve recently enhanced our practices to provide the best care possible.

In January, we dedicated an inset day to comprehensive training on behaviour management for all our staff members. This training allowed us to refine our approach, equipping us with the tools needed to address childrenโs big feelings constructively. We firmly believe in the power of continuous learning and reflection to provide the best care for your children.

Our commitment to nurturing childrenโs emotional well-being is further demonstrated by our โBehaviour Policy,โ which is our Policy of the Month for February. This policy serves as a guiding framework that helps us maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere within our setting. It outlines our expectations, strategies, and procedures for addressing challenging behaviours while prioritising empathy and understanding.

One of the cornerstones of our curriculum at Scallywags is our child-led forest school approach. Weโve found that this approach has a profound impact on childrenโs behaviour, physical development, well-being, and mental health.
Spending time outdoors in a natural setting allows children to explore, discover, and learn in their own way. This freedom fosters independence, confidence, and self-regulation. As children engage with nature, they develop a strong connection to the environment and a sense of responsibility for it, which often translates into more considerate and responsible behaviour.
Our forest school approach encourages physical activity, from climbing trees to exploring uneven terrain. This active play enhances gross and fine motor skills, coordination, and physical fitness, promoting overall health and well-being.
Nature has a soothing effect on the mind. Children who spend time in natural settings often experience reduced stress levels, improved concentration, and better mental health. Our forest school approach provides a calming and therapeutic environment for children to express their feelings and emotions.

In each of our playrooms, weโve created a safe space where children can co-regulate and self-regulate their emotions. When a child is experiencing big feelings, our staff members sit with them, offering a comforting presence and helping them understand their emotions. This approach teaches children valuable emotional intelligence skills and provides a secure space to express themselves.
We are dedicated to nurturing not only the intellectual but also the emotional growth of your child. Our commitment to continuous training, clear behaviour policies, and a child-led forest school approach ensures that we provide the best possible environment for your child to flourish emotionally and behaviourally. We understand that childrenโs big feelings are an essential part of their development, and weโre here to support them every step of the way.
