Welcome to our Hedgehog room, a vibrant space where the wonders of nature and child-led exploration come to life. Our Hedgehog room is meticulously designed to inspire curiosity and ignite the imagination of our 2.5-3-year-olds. Here, we seamlessly integrate the principles of our forest school curriculum, offering open-ended, real-life resources that invite children to engage in hands-on learning experiences. From natural materials to sensory-rich elements, every corner is thoughtfully curated to stimulate their senses and encourage exploration. Our room layout is intentionally flexible, allowing children the freedom to navigate their environment and make choices that drive their learning journey. With direct access to our garden, children have the autonomy to transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, embracing the beauty of nature firsthand. follow the Reggio Emilia theory regarding outdoor play, interaction, curiosity and investigation which is crucial to a child’s development. We do this by following our forest school ethos, meaning we use the outdoors as a classroom just as much as the indoors, we visit our local forest most days, weather permitting where risky play and exploration are the theme of the day. You will see natural resources in all of our rooms and toys and objects that will extend learning and imagination.

Reggio Emilia Theory

In our Hedgehog room, we wholeheartedly embrace the principles of Reggio Emilia, fostering an environment that ignites curiosity and encourages exploration. Through open-ended activities and hands-on experiences, we empower children to investigate their surroundings, nurturing their independence and imagination. By presenting challenges and puzzles, we cultivate problem-solving skills, instilling in them the confidence to take risks and embrace challenges. Our approach not only cultivates a sense of wonder but also builds their self-esteem, allowing each child to flourish within our room. This ethos seamlessly intertwines with our forest school, enriching their learning experiences with the wonders of nature, fostering a deep connection to the world around them.

In hedgehogs our aims are to promote investigation, awe and wonder, for children to explore their environment and use their imagination, encourage children to problem solve and take risks and to have a positive effect on their confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing.
