At the heart of everything we do is a deep commitment to the wellbeing, development, and happiness of each child in our care. This month, we focus on a cornerstone of our approach: the Key Person Policy, alongside our staff-to-child ratios and the vital role that students and volunteers play in enriching our learning environment.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴

At our setting, we believe that every child deserves a loving and supportive relationship with a trusted adult, which is why the Key Person role is central to our ethos. Before a child even arrives, they are assigned a dedicated Key Person who becomes their anchor, ensuring a smooth transition into the nursery and a stable foundation for their early learning experiences.

The Key Person is not just a point of contact but a source of emotional security. In the first crucial years of life, children thrive on consistency, care, and trust, all of which are nurtured by the Key Person. From completing the “All About Me” form to learning the child’s individual preferences, needs, and personality, the Key Person builds a bond that fosters the child’s social and emotional wellbeing. This relationship empowers children to explore their environment with confidence, knowing they are safe, loved, and valued.

Through regular observations and ongoing communication with parents, the Key Person monitors each child’s development, ensuring that their growth—whether emotional, physical, or cognitive—is continuously supported. By working in partnership with parents, we can create a seamless bridge between home and nursery, ensuring that children feel secure, supported, and understood in both environments.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

We see parents as our closest partners in nurturing each child’s development. Our approach is built on the understanding that a child’s early experiences are most powerful when we work together with families, sharing insights, milestones, and concerns. The Key Person takes on a primary role in this partnership, maintaining open lines of communication, offering regular updates on the child’s progress, and ensuring that parents feel involved and empowered throughout their child’s journey.

We encourage parents to engage in conversations with the Key Person, sharing insights from home that may help us better support their child. This ongoing dialogue ensures a consistent, nurturing environment where children can flourish emotionally, socially, and developmentally.

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘀: 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

In accordance with Ofsted guidelines, our staff-to-child ratios are designed to ensure that every child receives the attention and care they need. We know that children flourish when they feel seen, heard, and supported. By maintaining these ratios, we make sure that our staff can offer quality time and care to each child.

Whether it’s our 1:3 ratio for children under two or the 1:8 ratio for those aged three to seven, we never compromise on supervision and safety. These ratios are maintained rigorously throughout the day, ensuring that even during busy times or staff breaks, children are always well cared for.

Our commitment to these ratios also allows us to fully embrace the forest school ethos. With smaller groups, our staff can guide children through nature-based learning, supporting their curiosity and exploration in a safe and attentive environment. Children have the space to grow, make connections, and experience the world around them in meaningful, hands-on ways, while knowing that a trusted adult is always there to support them.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

We are passionate about fostering the next generation of early years professionals. Students and volunteers bring fresh energy, new perspectives, and a deep desire to learn. At the same time, we ensure that they are well-supervised and always uphold the highest standards of care.

All long-term students are required to undergo thorough background checks, and we conduct interviews to ensure that they are suited to working in our setting. Our students are closely supervised, never left alone with children, and they receive a comprehensive induction on our policies and practices. In doing so, we ensure that students not only gain invaluable experience but also contribute to our setting in a meaningful and responsible way.

We see students as learners themselves, and we work closely with their tutors to make sure they are receiving the support they need to succeed in their studies. By offering additional in-house training and opportunities to engage with different aspects of child development, we help them grow into skilled and compassionate early years educators.

At the core of our setting’s approach is a shared commitment to the health, wellbeing, and development of each child.
