At Scallywags Nursery, we believe that healthy habits start young โ and that includes caring for little teeth. With World Health Day in April and the excitement of Easter treats, itโs the perfect time to focus on childrenโs oral health and how we can work together with families to build strong, positive routines.
Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health issues, yet it is largely preventable. By introducing good habits early, we can help children grow up with healthy smiles and the confidence to care for themselves.

Good oral health isnโt just about teeth โ it supports childrenโs:
- Eating and nutrition
- Speech development
- Confidence and wellbeing
Creating positive experiences around brushing and dental care early on makes a lasting difference.

At Scallywags, oral health is woven into everyday learning and routines in a fun and engaging way:
Learning through play
- Reading stories about teeth and healthy smiles
- Exploring which foods help or harm our teeth
- Practising brushing on dolls and soft toys
- Looking at teeth in mirrors to build awareness
Real-life experiences
- Visits from dental professionals where possible
- Demonstrating toothbrushing routines and discussing why they matter
We aim to make oral health something children feel confident and curious about โ not something to worry about.

What children eat and drink plays a big role in protecting their teeth.
At nursery we:
- Offer healthy snacks daily and encourage children to try new foods
- Keep sugary foods to a minimum
- Provide nutritionally balanced hot meals through Zebedees
- Offer milk and water throughout the day
- Only provide juice on special occasions
- Never offer fizzy drinks
We also avoid using sweets or chocolate as rewards and instead celebrate achievements in other positive ways.

We know celebrations are important โ and that includes birthdays and seasonal events like Easter.
Children are welcome to enjoy:
- A small slice of birthday cake at nursery
- Occasional treats during celebrations
Any extra sweets are sent home, helping families manage how and when theyโre enjoyed.
Itโs all about balance, not restriction.

We work in partnership with families to keep routines consistent.
Some simple ways to support your child:
- Brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Encourage water or milk instead of sugary drinks
- Visit the dentist regularly
- Keep sugary treats to mealtimes where possible
Weโre always happy to offer advice, demonstrate brushing techniques, or share guidance to support you at home.
